• Students are required to read nightly for at least 30 minutes.
*Students need to record their reading on the reading log.Parents are asked to sign the log nightly. The log must include the title of the book, number of pages read, fiction/nonfiction, and number of minutes.

We have been working on the following skills during Balanced Literacy:

  • Making predictions
  • Making connections- text-to-text, text-to-world, and text-to-self.
  • Synthesizing- "putting the pieces together"
This strategy includes taking the prior knowledge(schema-what you already know), adding new knowledge acquired from the story, and finally synthesizing to connect both together.
  • Plot Development- identifying how the story unfolds.
  • Character Analysis- identifying characters' actions, comparing/contrasting characters

Students are expected to apply these skills and strategies as they read.
